Rencontres Audiovisuelles’s team is very happy to announce that the short film Astoria by Franck Dion has been selected in the official competition of the Annecy International Animation Festival!
A production by Rencontres Audiovisuelles and Franck Dion, in coproduction with Pictanovo – Fonds Emergence, with the support of the Conseil régional Haut-de-France.

FROM MAPPING TO SHORT FILM

The short film Astoria is adapted from the video mapping To be born elsewhere directed by Franck Dion for the facade of the Historial of the Great War in Péronne, as part of the Video Mapping Festival 2022 organised by Rencontres Audiovisuelles.
For this mapping piece, the director finds inspiration in the history of the city of Péronne, which he sees as a Phoenix metaphor, as the city has always risen from its ashes and reinvented itself after successive bombings. This gave life to the Astoria character and the opportunity to develop the themes of motherhood, reinvention and transmission.

During the mapping conception process, Franck Dion quickly sees the possibility to turn this creation into a film in its own right; he then decided to take up the theme and adapt writing and graphics to a short film format. A first in the history of adapting video mapping writing to single-screen writing!
Therefore, it was natural that he turned to Rencontres Audiovisuelles for the production of this adaptation. Even if the association is specialised in broadcasting and is not usually involved in the production of short films, they exceptionally agreed to take on this adventure!
