INTRODUCTION

Digital art, light art, augmented reality, heir of cinema, of VJing… The boundaries and origins of video mapping are porous, making this discipline hard to identify.
As an introduction, we will try to define video mapping and put it in a historical context, then benefit from 2 different points of view on what a successful mapping could be.

• What is video mapping?
Ludovic Burczykowski – artist and researcher, DeVisu laboratory, Université Polytechnique Hauts-de-France (France)
Martina Stella – artist and researcher, University of Paris 8 (Italy)

• What is a successful mapping?
Marek Šilpoch – programme coordinator, Signal Festival (Czech Republic)
Pierre-Yves Toulot – film director and co-founder, COSMO AV (France)

Martina Stella – artist and researcher, University of Paris 8 (Italy)
After a degree in Modern Languages and Cultures and 2 years of professional experience in a contemporary art gallery, Martina Stella resumed her studies in Photography and Contemporary Art at the University of Paris 8. Currently in her second year of Master’s degree, she develops her practice around spatialisation of image and writing. Her work takes the form of installations integrating drawing, photography and video art, as well as live video mapping performances in collaboration with other artists, poets and musicians.
In her career, theoretical researches and artistic creations have always been developed simultaneously: she sees video mapping as a tool, but also as a practice to redefine in the contemporary art world.

Marek Šilpoch – programme coordinator, Signal Festival (Czech Republic)
Marek Šilpoch is a visual artist currently working as programme coordinator for the Signal Festival. He is also co-founder of an audiovisual crew called XYZ project. After his studies in Graphic design and Glass design at UMPRUM (Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague), he has developed his work experience with lights since 2014, by starting with simple light installations for events and parties. Nowadays, his main focus is to create light sculptures in combination with glass. Pierre-Yves Toulot – film director and co-founder, COSMO AV (France)
Also known as «PYT».

If by reading this you think about a Michael Jackson’s song, pause your moonwalk, because we cannot summarise Pierre-Yves Toulot in a 3-letters acronym.
The ease bores him, his objective is to surprise audiences with his audiovisual, luminous and architectural creations. A taste for challenge that he expressed as early as his studies at ENSATT. He first started in lighting design for the performing arts, and then developed his career in the art of architectural and monumental projection. Nowadays, PYT is a reference in the profession: he is a consultant for the shows of the Futuroscope, the Puy du Fou, the Olympic Games and he has set several world records for the largest projected image.
